Cost Estimate for the Special Bill for Supporting Landmine Victims

    This paper is about cost estimate on the special bill for supporting landmine vic-tims. The purpose of the bill is to give economic support to people who have been injured and killed by landmines in Korea. The number of the victims is estimated about 134 people as of the end of 2007. Compensation funds and medical treatment cost will be provided to the victims.

    The bereaved family members will be given the compensation funds and both the compensation funds and the medical expenses will be offered to the injuries. When the amount of the compensation per each person is calculated, the following elements should be taken into consideration: victim’s minimum monthly income, Hoffmann coefficient, the number of dependents, the rate of deduction for living expenses, work capability loss ratio and so on. The individual medical cost is also estimated by the above method.

    In short, this report shows that the government budget required for the com-pensation funds and the medical expenses ranges from a minimum of 4.9 billion won to a maximum of 5.7 billion won.
